China and Russia expanding cooperation in the Arctic

China and Russia agree to expand mutually beneficial cooperation in the Arctic and promote the role of the Arctic shipping route in international maritime transport.

 

In the joint communication issued after the 29th meeting between the Chinese and Russian prime ministers, it was pointed out that Russia and China have agreed to expand mutually beneficial cooperation in the Arctic, promote the role of the Arctic shipping route in international maritime transport, and encourage enterprises from both countries to actively carry out Arctic shipping cooperation based on market-oriented principles.

 

The two prime ministers held the 29th regular meeting between the Chinese and Russian prime ministers in Moscow on August 21. On the same day, Premier Li Qiang held a meeting with Russian Federation President Putin.


The communique stated that both sides have agreed to expand mutually beneficial cooperation in the Arctic, engage in pragmatic dialogue within the framework of the Arctic Navigation Cooperation Subcommittee of the Russian Chinese Prime Minister's Regular Meeting Committee, strengthen cooperation in shipping development, navigation safety, polar ship technology and construction, promote the role of the Arctic Navigation in international maritime transportation, enhance icebreaker service capabilities, encourage enterprises from both countries to actively carry out Arctic navigation transportation cooperation based on market-oriented principles, and pay special attention to protecting the ecosystem of the Arctic region.
